A spiritual question for those who have read Leo Tolstoy's "The Death of Ivan Ilych"?

I do think it would have saved him a lot of suffering, but ot wouldn't have worked in the novel, because the point was the way he changed at the end, the way he grew through the pain and eventually softened. It would have been more humane, but as a literary device, it wouldn't have worked.
